Modern civility

Respect in a digital world

Digital communication can make contact immediate while leaving consideration behind. We can send a message in a moment, respond before we have understood and reach an audience we may never meet. These possibilities make thoughtful conduct more necessary.

Before sending a message, we can ask whether our meaning is clear, whether our tone serves the conversation and whether we have respected another person’s time and privacy. In disagreement, we can address an idea without diminishing the person who holds it. These are practical choices through which civility becomes visible.

Modern manners require awareness rather than performance. The aim is to communicate with enough confidence to be clear and enough consideration to recognise the other person. That is as relevant on a screen as it is in a room.
